Grade Specification Comparison Table:

Property F304 F304L F316
Carbon Content (%) ≤0.08 ≤0.03 ≤0.08
Corrosion Resistance High High Higher
Weldability Good Excellent Good

Corrosion Resistance:

ASTM A182 F304 flanges exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion in a wide range of environments, including:

  • Atmospheric conditions
  • Mildly oxidizing and reducing environments
  • Acids such as nitric acid and acetic acid

Heat Resistance:

The grade demonstrates good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870°C and in continuous service up to 925°C. However, it is not recommended for environments with severe carburizing or reducing conditions.

Heat Treatment:

  • Solution Annealing: Heat to 1010-1120°C and cool rapidly.
  • Hardening: This grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment; only cold working can increase hardness.

Welding:

ASTM A182 F304 flanges have excellent weldability and are compatible with various welding methods such as TIG, MIG, and resistance welding. Post-weld annealing is generally not required unless the application is particularly corrosive.

Fabrication:

This grade is easy to fabricate using standard machining and forming techniques. Its high ductility and toughness make it suitable for processes like bending, cutting, and drilling.

Applications:

ASTM A182 F304 stainless steel flanges are widely used in various industries, including:

  • Oil & Gas: For pipelines and pressure vessels
  • Chemical Processing: Corrosion-resistant fittings and valves
  • Power Plants: High-temperature applications
  • Food & Beverage: Hygienic and safe handling equipment
  • Pharmaceutical: Sterile environments
  • Marine: Resistance to saltwater environments
