Corrosion Resistance

ASTM A182 F410 stainless steel offers moderate corrosion resistance in fresh water, steam, mild acids, and alkaline environments. However, it is not recommended for highly corrosive or chloride-rich conditions. For improved corrosion resistance, surfaces can be polished or passivated.

Heat Resistance

This alloy provides excellent oxidation resistance up to 650°C (1200°F). It maintains its structural integrity under cyclic heating and cooling. At elevated temperatures, mechanical strength remains high, making it suitable for turbine and valve components.

Heat Treatment

  • Annealing: 815–900°C (1500–1650°F), air or furnace cool.

  • Hardening: Heat to 980–1010°C (1800–1850°F), oil or air quench.

  • Tempering: 200–370°C (390–700°F) depending on hardness requirements.

Proper heat treatment enhances toughness, ductility, and wear resistance.

Welding

ASTM A182 F410 can be welded using TIG, MIG, or stick welding techniques, though preheating to 200–300°C is recommended to minimize cracking. Post-weld heat treatment (tempering or annealing) improves ductility and corrosion resistance.

Fabrication

This grade is readily machined in the annealed condition and can be forged between 950°C and 1200°C. Slow cooling is preferred after hot working to prevent cracking. Machined surfaces should be finished to avoid surface oxidation.
