Corrosion Resistance
ASTM A420 WPL3 fittings possess moderate resistance to corrosion in general atmospheric and mild chemical environments. For enhanced protection, they can be coated with black paint, galvanization, or epoxy coatings, especially in marine or corrosive service.
Heat Resistance
WPL3 fittings are intended for low-temperature service, maintaining toughness and mechanical stability down to -46°C. They are not suitable for high-temperature service but perform excellently under cryogenic and subzero applications.
Heat Treatment
Normalizing: 900–950°C followed by air cooling
Tempering/Stress Relieving: to improve ductility and relieve internal stress
Heat treatment enhances toughness and ensures compliance with ASTM A420 standards.
Welding
ASTM A420 WPL3 pipe fittings exhibit good weldability using standard welding methods like GTAW, SMAW, and GMAW. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment may be required for thicker sections to avoid cracking and ensure structural stability.
Fabrication
These fittings offer excellent formability and machinability, allowing cold and hot forming operations. WPL3 material can be easily fabricated into elbows, tees, reducers, and other complex shapes without compromising strength or ductility.
